Japanese Ephemera
Transcribed captured 6 page Japanese diary translation from Lt Gkajima, an infantryman on Guadalcanal between the time he arrived on November 15,1943 and January 21, 1944. It was translated by an American Red Cross member Jane H. Mayhew, who was stationed there during the battles. The diary was a battlefield pick-up that she acquired while there and translated it on her spare time. It is the personal account of his experience while there and was not meant to be read by others. Some of the details of the diary mention others by name who died of various wounds and the poor treatment of the men by Officers, starvation to the point of eating ants, and a hint of cannibalism. He also mentions the Americans and the picking food off the dead, battle casualties and air raids, artillery barrages and some troop movements. A very interesting and personal view that is rarely seen or written about. Unfortunately the diary is long gone and only this translation remains. It is typed out on paper that Mayhew had on the island and is six pages long. M

In World War II, all Japanese soldiers were issued with a silk national flag, which they asked comrades to sign. Most names on the flags are names of soldiers, sometimes there are slogans such as 'kill the enemy', 'may you be protected', 'courage', etc. It was considered good luck and some wore it for protection around the head or waist when in battle. This specimen was no doubt removed from the body of a dead soldier as it has blood on it. M
