Note: Muley El Hassan Ben El Mehdi (1912-1984) was the second and final Caliph of the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco. He was the son of Muley el Mehdi Ismael Alaoui (died 1923), the Caliph from 1913 to 1923. El Hassan ascended the throne in 1925 in Tetouan. On June 1, 1949 Hassan, married Princess Lalla Fatima Zohra (1926-2003), the only daughter of Abd al-Aziz. The Sultan was Hassan's cousin. As a wedding gift, Franco gave Hassan a cheque for over one million pesetas. In In August 1953, Mohammed V, Sultan of Morocco was deposed in French Morocco and replaced by Sidi Mohammed ben Arafa. Shortly afterwards , Franco and Hassan proclaimed a sovereign Spanish Morocco. In 1956 Morocco became independent and Hassan became ambassador to London and subsequently, ambassador in Rome, returning to Morocco in the 1960s.
