Photos and Postcards
TRP 049Set of 3 photo albums from a British person working with a munitions factory in Kirikkale in 1942-1943. His name was A. E. Hayward. What is interesting is that Turkey was neutral during the war, but these albums suggest that the Turks were selling bullets to the British. An extremely well and legibly captioned album, the owner travels to a number of villages throughout Anatolia. One album is devoted to his return visit to Turkey with his wife in 1955 and comments how dreary life was for him during the war in Kirikkale. The photos are tipped in, with most of them contain captions and dates on reverse. He had a good camera and a good eye as he captured daily life not only in large cities like Istanbul,
TRP 049 Bursa and Ankara, but lesser known places such as Yalova, Ahilli, Kirik Koyu, Yuva Koyul, Hasan Dede, Ulu Dag, Yuva Koyu, Lutfe, Elma Dag, Buyuk Ada, Floriya, Canakale, Incir Alti (now part of Izmir). He was a bit of a character and he is calling the people to prayer from atop a minaret, there are 3 photos of the procession of Ataturks body (although he died 5 years ealier). Many Turks mentioned by name, numerous photos surround the shell factory he was assigned to. There are 454 photos in all; 318 of which are during the war, the remainder from his 1955 visit. The later contains 136; of which 94 are of Turkey, 24 are of Greece and 18 are of Rome. There are also 4 postcards to his children in Surrey from the 1955 trip. These albums are an excellent source for anyone studying Anatolia during the war. The owners comments and observations are interesting as well. As his name and post-war address are known, perhaps someone can research his biography and understand better what a British subject was doing in neutral Turkey working at a munitions factory. B
