2 lengthy letters relating to China-based medical missionary Dr. Claude E. Forkner, dated 1935. One is from his mother Lucy Forkner (1875-1954), a missionary teacher working in Peiping, and another from a fellow American missionary with the Chinese name Mei Lien. She calls herself “the prune companion”. Both letters come with their original envelopes. They are very detailed accounts of being in China and mentions about war and the Chinese people being humiliated. Also a photo of Lucy and a friend Molly. It is getting very difficult to find missionary letters from China.

Note: Marion Dubois Forkner was married to Dr. Claude E. Forkner. They lived in Beijing from 1932-1937. They had 4 children: Thomas, Claude, Helen and Lucy. In 1934 Claude was professor of medicine at Peking Union Medical Center. In 1944 he was director of the China Medical Board, in Beijing. After the war he was the personal physician to the Shah of Iran.
