Membership and Identity under Fascism: Identity Cards from Everyday Life in Fascist Italy, 1922–1945
The Fascist regime in Italy sought to reshape society not only through political authority but also through an extensive network of professional, educational, military, charitable, recreational, youth, labor, veterans', and civic organizations that reached into nearly every aspect of everyday life. Membership cards and identity documents formed an essential part of this administrative system, recording affiliation, status, occupation, and participation within the institutions that supported—or were required to function within—the Fascist state.
This collection brings together 161 original identity and membership cards issued by a wide variety of organizations during the Fascist period in Italy.
