Photos and Postcards
A120 photo collection by a soldier who was a signalman with the 1/4th Wiltshire Regiment based in India during World War 1.
PHPC 064A number of rare photos of signalmen and a number of obscure villages are shown, such as Kailana, Chakrata and Chaubatia. (Note: Chakrata today is an access-restricted military cantonement. It is the permanent garrison of the secretive and elite Special Frontier Force, also known as Establishment 22 ( or 'Two-Two), the only ethnic Tibetan unit of the Indian Army). Other known places such as Delhi Fort and Kingsway Station as well. Rare photo of Lord Radnor is shown (he was the Brevet Colonel commanding the 1/4th Wilts and then promoted to Brigadier General of the Dehra Dun Brigade). Many military as well as local interest photos. Interesting photos of the 2/9th Gurkhas (part of the 19th Dehra Dun Brigade) as well as signalmen from the Buffs Regiment. Military transport along mountain passes, comic relief in camp, firing artillery, native bazaars, football, etc.
During the war, the Wiltshire's Territorial component would expand from one battalion to three. The 1/4 Wilts was called into service in 1914 and dispatched to India. For the next three years, it performed internal security duties in India until being transferred to Egypt in 1917. There it continued to perform security duties until joining the 75th Infantry Division, part of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. While serving with the 75th Division, the 1/4 Wilts would see action at the Battle of Megiddo. Many photos have descriptions on reverse.
This is the first set of photos I have seen depicting the life in a Signals unit in the British Army in India. B
